Our Seaweed: Eucheuma Cottonii
At Seedsea, we cultivate Eucheuma Cottonii seaweed in Nusa Lembongan, Indonesia. This fast-growing seaweed is rich in high-quality carrageenan, making it valuable for various industries.
Our Location: Nusa Lembongan, Indonesia
Nusa Lembongan is a small tropical island (8.69 km²) with great potential for seaweed farming. In the 1990s, seaweed farming improved local livelihoods, but when prices dropped in 2014, many farmers shifted to tourism. Now, 2,025 hectares of potential seaweed farms lie unused, and only 150 farmers continue to cultivate seaweed independently. In 2022, a ban on raw seaweed exports to encourage processing led to further price drops, causing more farmers to leave the industry.
Seedsea aims to unlock Nusa Lembongan's full potential by expanding seaweed farming to benefit both the community and the environment. Eucheuma Cottonii is highly effective for carbon sequestration and is in high demand worldwide. Indonesia is among the top three raw seaweed exporters globally.
